BeAnalogic.com promotes and spreads the idea of analog photography, that is why we want to learn more about our users! “Outside Fridge” is a section of our website, where we interview our users. Why “Outside Fridge”? Often, analog photographers save their films in the fridge, to maintain the quality of celluloid. Once put, you can “relax and chat” with us. Today we interview Chiara Dondi.
Sebastiano: Who is Chiara Dondi?
Chiara: If I would be a recipe you would read: 1/3 of curiosity, 1/3 of melancholy and 1/3 of laughter.
Sebastiano: When did your passion for photography?
Chiara: I think photography has always been in my mind as an hidden passion. I remember how my father took clicks about my childhood and how this practice annoyed me but at the same time intrigued me. Growing up I have understood that photography suits me but just behind the camera.
Sebastiano: Do you remember when you took your first film roll pack?
Chiara: It was a “borrowed” roll given by a friend of mine.
Sebastiano: What do you like about film photography or photography in general?
Chiara: It makes me dream and gives me the opportunity to create something that will last. And that means more in film photography because is less immediate, it needs more patience than digital photography.
Sebastiano: What kind of photography usually you shot and what kind of film cameras did you use?
Chiara: My photography is focused on portrait of women, their relationship with space, other women and also with me that I’m behind that camera. I prefer bioptical cameras, Lubitel and Rolleicord with Ilford rolls.
Sebastiano: What are the characteristics that distinguish you as a photographer?
Chiara: That’s really a good question. Everything or nothing, it depends on who is watching at my photos. I have always try to recognize me from other photographers but this takes a lot of my energy and I think that is not so important. I’ve start to do what I want and need on films and if it recognizes me from others that’s okay.
Sebastiano: I see on your Instagram profile that you shoot people. Can you talk about this project?
Chiara: The people of my photos are the people of my life that just for a few minutes try to personify an idea. I prefer to work with someone that I intimate know, it makes everything easier.
Sebastiano: Can you talk about your series “hands by me”?
Chiara: In this specific historical period we always talk about femminism like something that needs to be said aloud. For me the relationship between women has to be something more intimate. A deep harmony that makes stronger.
Sebastiano: Who are the photographers that influenced your work?
Chiara: Sarah Moon for her beautiful atmospheres and colors, Letizia Battaglia for her powerful portraits, Julia Margaret Cameron because she makes me dream, Wilhelm von Gloeden because intrigues me and so many others. It would be a long list.
Sebastiano: What is the future of film photography?
Chiara: What I hope is what I can see now. A conscious rediscovery and interest in film photography as something that is not old but something that can teach us how take another look before act.
Sebastiano: Your plans for future?
Chiara: To evolve myself, to change without being afraid of what it would mean.
