BeAnalogic.com promotes and spreads the idea of analog photography, that is why we want to learn more about our users! “Outside Fridge” is a section of our website, where we interview our users. Why “Outside Fridge”? Often, analog photographers save their films in the fridge, to maintain the quality of celluloid. Once put, you can “relax and chat” with us. Today we interview Eszter Valy.

Sebastiano: Who is Eszter Valy ?
Eszter: I’m Eszter from Budapest, Hungary, currently living in the United Kingdom in a beautiful town not far from London. I started taking pictures when I was about 14-15 years old.

Sebastiano: When did your passion for photography?
Eszter: When I was 14-15 years old,I got a compact camera from my parents.I was taking macro photos, than a few years later portrait photography started to interest me. I started my studies in Budai Rajz iskola in Budapest (Art school of Buda, Budapest) in 2010, after high school where I learnt all the photograpy techniques from photogramms to analog and digital photography. Then I applied for photography course in University (Metropolitan University of Budapest ) where I started my studies in 2012 and I completed them in 2015.

Sebastiano: Do you remember when you took your first film roll pack?
Eszter: When I visited London for the first time I was about 11 years old and that time we didn’t have digital cameras back home so my father gave me an easy to use film camera.

Sebastiano: What do you like about film photography or photography in general?
Eszter: I love the developing process, it is a complex process you have to be very careful and patient but at at the end of it,you will have a picture in your hand what you’ve worked for hours and it is a wonderful feeling.

Sebastiano: What kind of photography usually you shot and what kind of film cameras did you use?
Eszter: I took portraits with my medium format camera but since a few years I have been using a digital camera more often.

Sebastiano: What are the characteristics that distinguish you as a photographer?
Eszter: I love antique objects, and natural environments so I always try to place my models in it. When I take portraits I always blur the background tohighlight my models. Most of the time I shoot my portraits in Black and White or if I use digital camera I always imagine my future images in Black and White.

Sebastiano: I see on Flickr that you shoot people and places. Can you talk about your works?
Eszter: I love shoot portraits of my friends and family members. I usually use natural lights. I don’t have a studio so I always take pictures in parks, on the street or someone’s place. If I go somewhere I always take my camera with me. Who knows when you can take a good picture. My favourite subject is Mima, she is my 93 years old grandmother. I started to photograph her in 2013 in a school project and I’m still taking pictures of her.

Sebastiano: Who are the photographers that influenced your work?
Eszter: There are a number of photographers who’s work have inspired me,for example: Annie Leibovitz, Sally Mann, Man Ray, Richard Avedon and Marton Munkácsi.

Sebastiano: What is the future of film photography?
Eszter: I think there always will be a photographer who chooses film photography instead of digital.

Sebastiano: Your plans for future?
Eszter: Taking better and better pictures.
